Background of the Study
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions in oneself and others. It plays a crucial role in various aspects of human life, particularly in professional settings like nursing, where interpersonal relationships and emotional management are key to effective care delivery (Adams et al., 2023). Nursing students with high EI tend to have better communication skills, stronger patient relationships, and greater resilience in the face of stress. Given that nurses often deal with emotionally charged situations, such as providing care for critically ill patients and supporting distressed families, developing EI is essential for their professional success (Tella et al., 2024).

The University of Jos Teaching Hospital (UJTH) is known for its commitment to fostering holistic nursing education, and emotional intelligence training is an area of focus in its nursing curriculum. By integrating EI training into nursing programs, UJTH aims to improve nursing students' interpersonal skills, including their ability to manage emotions, communicate effectively, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and exhibit empathy (Akinlolu et al., 2023). Research has shown that EI training enhances students' capacity to handle interpersonal challenges and contributes to better patient outcomes (Abdullahi et al., 2024).

This study aims to explore the impact of emotional intelligence training on nursing students' interpersonal skills at UJTH, examining how it influences their communication, teamwork, and patient interactions.

Statement of the Problem
While the importance of emotional intelligence in nursing practice is well-established, there is limited empirical evidence on how EI training specifically impacts nursing students' interpersonal skills in Nigeria, particularly in the context of the University of Jos Teaching Hospital. Understanding the effectiveness of EI training in this context is vital for shaping nursing curricula and preparing students for the interpersonal demands of the nursing profession.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of emotional intelligence training on the interpersonal skills of nursing students at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.

2. To assess the effectiveness of EI training in improving communication and teamwork among nursing students.

3. To examine how emotional intelligence training influences nursing students' patient care interactions.

Research Questions

1. How does emotional intelligence training affect the interpersonal skills of nursing students at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital?

2. To what extent does emotional intelligence training improve communication and teamwork among nursing students?

3. How does emotional intelligence training influence nursing students' interactions with patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Emotional intelligence training significantly improves the interpersonal skills of nursing students at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.

2. Emotional intelligence training enhances communication and teamwork among nursing students.

3. Emotional intelligence training positively impacts nursing students' interactions with patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nursing students at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital who have undergone emotional intelligence training. Limitations may include variations in the quality of EI training and the influence of external factors on students' interpersonal skills.
